Placement Centre is a unique teamwork tool for practice education
Placement Centre helps you get projects done

“What impresses me most is the speed of response.
It makes me feel better about taking students because it used be very hard work chasing people around by phone, leaving messages, and then not being available yourself when they ring back!”

imageAbout Placement Centre

Placement Centre is a unique teamwork tool for practice education.

It is underpinned by a powerful database and a dedicated support team at inPractice, who are on hand at any point to give help, training and refine every screen to your exact needs. Placement Centre makes it simple to communicate and collaborate before, during and after students are placed.

It can export Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and even PDF documents so generating reports or mail merge for an entire cohort is as simple as clicking a button.

It's elegant, easy, and web-based. You don't need to download, install, or configure anything (no IT department required!) All you need is a web browser and an internet connection. And don't worry, your data is safe with us.

Staff, students and educators can have variable degrees of access which brings your entire social network together in one place - this means instant feedback, messages, comprehensive notes and support which virtually guarantees all your records will be up to date.

The Placement Lifecycle
As offers are made available from the organisations linked to the HEI they are logged into Placement Centre and are given a special 'phase' attribute which indicates a position in the 'placement lifecycle'.

The 'placement lifecycle' indicates the stage a placement is at (e.g. Offer, Assigned, InProgress, Completed) and Placement Centre can be tailored to trigger alerts to you when it changes. For example, a student may receive an email notification to view their placement details when staff change it from 'offer' to 'assigned'.

The lifecycle is used to help create a workflow process for your department - you may already have one, in which case Placement Centre can use yours.

The phase allows you to quickly find particular placements, such as 'all offers for the part-time programme in Liverpool'.

Feedback: What people are saying about Placement Centre

“It has made group work so much easier, especially for someone who is dyslexic and has trouble writing down e-mail address correctly!!! Much easier planning what you want to say and e-mailing tutors, and then you have all the information in print so have a record of information to refer back too. Also made staying in touch with other years and making plans for social outings at res weekends easier - It's a great idea!”
-Michelle Parker, Student, Cardiff University.

“The new InPractice online application is fantastic! And it was great to see the placement database up and running so quickly . It’s already saving time and confusion. It only took little while to become proficient with the software and its versatility and ease of use is a joy! Best of all we are able to provide new levels of professionalism for our placement providers and students”
-Lorraine Kent, Adminstrator, Galway University, Ireland.

“It has the flexibility to meet the needs of a very complex system as seen in Wales, or where there are smaller numbers and fewer sites.”
-Tracey Polglase, Practice Education Lead, Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff University, Department of Occupational Therapy

“Well, I only joined up yesterday as a clinical coordinator, and the immediate obvious benefit to me is the overview it provides when the offers are coming from our very large geographical patch.”
- Vanessa Townsend, Clinical educator, South Wales

“I really enjoy keeping close contact with colleagues and staff which is really necessary on a course like this as most of my peers are living so far away. The ability to work as a group from inPractice is so much easier - distance not being an issue anymore.
Having instant replies from staff is essential and so vital. Keeping a full record of the placements and hours is always so handy. I use the forms produced for my placements so life is generally easier throughout. Thanks”
-Jackie Tyler, Student, Bangor University

“Very very impressive!”
-Cara Shapland, Practice Education Co-ordinator, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

“It has made a fab difference to the way I work. I constantly use the internet and log on to the database frequently, it is well set up and clear to those who are less literate at using the computer, I find it is useful in contacting tutors, college mates and people from other years and colleges, Bangor etc... Well done. Give yourself and your team a pat on the Back!!!!”
- Anna Davies, Final year student, Wales

“What impresses me most is the speed of response. It makes me feel better about taking students because it could be very hard work chasing people around by phone, leaving messages, and then not being available yourself when they rang back. ”

Placement Centre Case Study:
The All Wales Practice Education Team

Placement Centre is used by Cardiff University to bridge three universities that run the length and breadth of Wales: Cardiff, Wrexham and Bangor. It's used to manage all cohorts from three programmes and Erasmus students too.

Placement offers come in from over 500 organisations in Wales and England, and are then used by the three departments co-operatively - although they are able to work individually too.

As an offer is made it is entered into Placement Centre, linked to an organisation and educator. It's then given a status within the 'placement lifecycle' which allows it to be sorted and accessed in many ways for easy tracking and reporting.

Placement Centre does not blindly allocate students to places like some solutions, instead it displays the offers and supporting information to help you place your student quickly and correctly; with customized annotations such as 'required experience', student learning difficulties, cars for remote locations or the need for accommodation.

We've also encouraged students and educators to login to see their placement details, they can update their C.P.D. using the online forms and everyone can send messages and leave notes!

And because it can be accessed anywhere we truly are an All Wales Practice Education Team.

Placement Centre Q&A

What about privacy, security, and confidentiality?

We take careful precautions to protect our customers' information. Access to the service is available via the Secure Sockets Layer. Though we offer safeguards to protect your data, please keep in mind that we can not guarantee 100% security. Take appropriate measures with your passwords, and user accounts.

What are the system requirements to use Placement Centre?

Since Placement Centre is hosted on our servers, there's nothing to install and no server/platform requirements to worry about. All you need is a modern web browser with Javascript turned on (Placement Centre officially supports IE 6 or later on the PC, Firefox on Mac, PC, Linux, and Safari on Mac) and an internet connection. Placement Centre does not support IE 5.x on the Mac or PC although you may find that it works we can not provide help and support for it. If you have IE 5, we recommend switching to Firefox — it's modern, fast, compatible, and free.

Can I specify which staff, students and educators see which screens?

Yes. Placement Centre features a simple permissions system that allows you to set permission on a per-user basis. For example, if you want your secretaries to see read-only views of placement timetables we can do just that.

Will my Placement Centre site look like my University's identity?

You can customize your Placement Centre site with your University's name, colours and logo of your choice.

We've already been using a small database can I use the existing records with Placement Centre?

Yes, we can provide this service for you.

Can I get my data out if I want to discontinue using Placement Centre?

Yes, you can easily export all your messages and comments in XML format at any time. We'll do everything we can to make the transition away from Placement Centre a pleasant one - but we hope to keep you happy enough to stay!

Can we run Placement Centre on our own servers?

Placement Centre is a web-based, hosted service. It is not available for purchase to install on your own servers.
